Tryouts by Adara Meyers

Tryouts by Adara Meyers

Salvage Vanguard Theater (SVT) invites you to the MainStage world premiere of Tryouts by Adara Meyers, a Boston-based experimental playwright. Directed by co-Artistic Director Diana Lynn Small, Tryouts casts a satirical gaze on women, femininity, and motherhood, inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Virgin and Child with St. Anne,” and Freud’s debunked maternal psychosexual essay on the painting. Two mothers and three teenage girls maneuver the confines of a prestigious and draconian high school when in a tragicomic turn of events, the mothers throw themselves into the work of forming a pseudo-religious order focused on topiary and the girls confront head-on the primly grim version of adulthood they’ve been taught all too well.

Works Progress Austin: Casta by Adrienne Dawes

Works Progress Austin: Casta by Adrienne Dawes

Salvage Vanguard Theater invites you to attend a staged reading of Casta by Adrienne Dawes, presented as part of Works Progress Austin on August 24th and 25th.

Casta is inspired by a series of casta paintings by Miguel Cabrera, a mixed-race painter from Oaxaca. Casta paintings were a unique form of portraiture that grew in popularity over the 18th century in Nueva España/colonial Mexico. The paintings depicted different racial mixtures arranged according to a hierarchy defined by Spanish elites. When a lowly apprentice is commissioned to paint a casta series for a wealthy patron, he tries to conform his work to a set hierarchy. The images revolt, illuminating a complex portrait of fluid Latinx identities.

Works Progress Vancouver: Heaven Born Wind

Works Progress Vancouver: Heaven Born Wind

As one family moves through a barren landscape, the individual members are simultaneously each other’s only hope and greatest threat. A hulking father refuses to hunt, and a restless mother hides the concept of Home from her exhausted children. Heaven Born Wind lives in the boundaries between safety and danger: this side of the river and the need to ford the river; the warm circle of firelight and that which roams in the darkness beyond; the need to eat and their dwindling ammunition; the need for protection, yet the strongest among them is being driven mad by the wind, the wind, the heaven-born wind.

House Play by Diana Lynn Small

House Play by Diana Lynn Small

Three girls are left for dead in the woods and each takes on a new identity to survive: One becomes a Woman and builds a bungalow, one becomes an Animal and lives naked in a tree, and one becomes a Sybil, prayerful and sly in a lightning-struck holy hole. It doesn’t go well. HOUSE PLAY is a new play, made to be performed in homes. A dinner, a hospitality ritual, a fable, HOUSE PLAY explores what it means to be an indoor creature in a world made-up of the outdoors. How can we be hospitable to a wilderness of neighbors, strangers and intimate companions?
